artist’s statement

My work is an exploration of deep time and the deep future, inspired by Romantic painting, folk stories and myths, and geological treasures hidden in the earth.

In these imagined, abstracted landscapes I explore the notion of story telling and myth making, wrapped in distant timescales that I am pulled towards, no doubt because I find them impossible to comprehend.  Recurring motifs of caves, fossils, bones - remnants of early human or Neanderthal life - allude to the past, whilst a deep future, post human, is imagined through trace fossils of the Anthropocene.

The landscapes hold strong allusions to human bodies, inferring a sense of transference through the land; bodily shapes are buried in the folds of the mountains or the crevices of the rocks.  The cave as a place of refuge, or entrapment, of tunnels leading into the dark void, being swallowed up into the earth - these concepts have a psychological power in my work.  The repeating symbols used in these vistas serve as a magical incantation, like cave paintings, to reach for the sublime in a chaotic present. Folk stories and myths are imagined and then realised between the visual work and the titles; for me these are otherworldly, ethereal places that represent an invisible world between what we think happened in the past, and what may come to pass in the future.
